I met Joey P early in the beginning of my DJing days, when I was still very wet behind the ears, but very eager to learn. Joey was one of those people who were always glad to impart their knowledge on me, as well as instilling in me a sense of pride in both the city and the music, in hopes that I would keep the artform sacred. I learned valuable lessons from people like him, DJ Seoul, and the CORADOR United crew that brought me up into the scene. At some point in everyone’s music career, whether you’re a DJ, a producer, an emcee or vocalist, you become autonomous, and start to forge your own path, but you never forget the lessons that were taught to you by those who cared enough to take you under their wing.

Joey P was always a sick drum n bass DJ, who I enjoyed working with. He is also the founder of Bassline Mondays at The Necto in Ann Arbor, which happens every Monday night in the Red Room, featuring the regions best bass music DJs and producers every week.

DJ LaJedi is a very interesting person who I personally have a lot of respect for. Her DJ moniker, LaJedi, (pronounced “la heady”) was a name that was given to her by native guides and travel companions when she backpacked through Mexico, near the seas, pyramids and pueblas. It is the Mexican translation of Jedi. LaJedi is also a talented musician, proficient with the flute, bass guitar and electronic instruments. She is a part of The Foundation at 5 Elements Gallery, a celebration of women in hip hop, as well as New Yak City, a monthly hip hop showcase at JD’s Key Club in Pontiac hosted by One Be Lo.

Remember, we will be choosing fifteen speakers from the topics that were presented. Ten speakers are chosen by the community, and five of them are chosen by the organizational team. We do it this way to give a chance to some of the topics that we think are worthy of a top spot, but may not have benefited from the broadcasting abilities that helps some of the top contenders get massive amounts of votes. I’m proud to announce that I will be spinning records at the new Planned Parenthood Ferndale grand opening. The ribbon-cutting celebration will be at Affirmations on Tuesday, April 3rd, and I will also be joined by local emcee and political activist, Invincible. The event begins at 5pm and ends around 7pm.

There is a small group of people in this country that want to make us believe that Planned Parenthood is something it’s not, just because of their ideological differences with providing affordable sexual health and family planning services to uninsured and low-income people. I firmly support the efforts of Planned Parenthood, and encourage everyone who believes in their mission to come and support. I am not being paid for this gig, I have donated my time, talents and equipment to help make this event a success because I believe in it.

Affirmations is located on 9 mile, a block West of Woodward Avenue, in Ferndale, Michigan. [MAP]

The Ignite Detroit team is very proud to announce that Ignite Detroit #3 will return to Sound Board inside the luxurious MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit on Wednesday, April 25th. Tickets will be available starting April 1st. Starting with this event, we will be charging $5 per ticket. 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales will go towards a Detroit-based charity. (TBD)

I met my roommate, Brian Mulloy, at TEDxDetroit last year. He is a Detroit historian, and his presentation was the story of how the French laid the foundation for Detroit. The French intended for Detroit to be a eutopian society where they would live together with the native Americans and learn from each other in peace and harmony. If you are interested in Detroit history, you may want to check out The Detroit Drunken Historical Society, which will be meeting Wednesday, March 21st, at Liv Resto Lounge.

Michigan Central Station is right down the street from me, and despite the blight that it has become, is still one of the most beautiful structures in Detroit. It’s been abandoned for more than twenty years, a token remnant of the once thriving railroad industry that was pulverized by Eisenhower to make room for the Interstate Highway System. Eisenhower put a law into effect that banned the federal government from spending money on new rail projects, which stood in place until Barack Obama was elected. We may never, especially here in Michigan, catch up with the rest of the world in terms of mass transit, but at least we have these shitty cars, right! SMH, America needs a makeover, not just Detroit.

At first I was skeptical about this. A few months ago a mixtape was released on Soundcloud that was supposed to be a live recording of Derrick May from 1988. I posted it on Twitter, and Derrick May replied back to me to let me know that it wasn’t him, and that it was some of his friends who were trying to sound like him that made it as a joke. It was still quite good, but not authentic. If the beginning intro to this set isn’t a dead Jeff Mills giveaway, I don’t know what will convince you. “Cut it up Wiz, cut it up!” Take yourself back to the golden days of hip hop and enjoy this set that played live on 93.1 WDRQ FM Detroit in 1985.

I found this on Reddit today, posted by a good friend of mine. It is a graphical history of the Detroit Tiger’s logo.

Here is a fun fact about the “D”: Many want to call it the “Olde English D” but if you say that to an Englishman, they will be quite offended. The Detroit Tiger’s logo represents a 16th century German Gothic typeface.
